Leo Szilard

Leo Szilard, a Hungarian theoretical physicist, was a survivor of WW I. In an army hospital when that conflict ended, after rehabilitation he moved to Germany and enrolled at the University of Berlin to begin intensive study in the physical sciences. By 1921, he had chosen his thesis subject: the baffling inconsistency in thermodynamics, that branch of physics that concerns relationships between heat and other forms of energy. In Berlin, Szilard met and won attention from Albert Einstein, already a distinguished professor given authority to accept only students he himself selected. Einstein liked Szilard, and between 1924 and 1934 the two of them working together had applied and received twenty-nine patents from the German patent office; most of the joint applications dealt with home refrigerators.75
